Amateur & Professional Events

WKO Medical Cover & Ringside Safety Requirements

Purpose

The World Kickboxing Organisation (WKO) is committed to maintaining the highest reasonably practicable standards of competitor safety at all sanctioned activities.

These requirements establish the minimum medical, safety, and operational standards expected of all promoters, organisers, clubs, coaches, officials, competitors, and participants involved in WKO sanctioned events.

Failure to comply with these requirements may result in sanctions, suspension of participation, withdrawal of event approval, disciplinary action, or other measures deemed necessary by WKO in the interests of safety.

Duty of Care

All parties involved in a WKO sanctioned event share responsibility for promoting and maintaining a safe sporting environment.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Event organisers and promoters.

  • Club owners and coaches.

  • Officials and referees.

  • Competitors and participants.

  • Parents and guardians of junior competitors.

Each party is responsible for complying with WKO rules, policies, safeguarding requirements, medical requirements, and applicable legislation.

Competitor Medical Responsibility

Every competitor is responsible for ensuring they are medically fit to participate.

By entering a WKO sanctioned activity, competitors confirm that:

  • They have not knowingly withheld any medical information that may affect their ability to participate safely.

  • They have not been advised by a medical practitioner to refrain from participation.

  • They are not currently subject to any medical suspension, restriction, or condition that would make participation unsafe.

  • They will immediately disclose any injury, illness, concussion symptoms, or medical concern that arises before or during an event.

Where a competitor is under 18 years of age, these declarations must be made by a parent or legal guardian.

Coach and Club Responsibilities

Coaches and club representatives are responsible for ensuring that competitors entered into WKO activities:

  • Are appropriately trained and prepared.

  • Are entered honestly within the correct age, weight, and experience categories.

  • Are not knowingly carrying injuries or medical conditions that could place them or others at increased risk.

  • Comply with all WKO medical and safety requirements.

Knowingly providing false, misleading, or incomplete information may result in disciplinary action, suspension, or withdrawal of club recognition.

Event Medical Cover

All WKO sanctioned events must provide medical cover appropriate to the nature, duration, and risk profile of the activity being conducted.

Minimum medical cover requirements shall be determined by WKO based upon factors including:

  • Ruleset.

  • Contact level.

  • Number of participants.

  • Duration of contests.

  • Age of participants.

  • Venue suitability.

  • Risk assessment outcomes.

WKO reserves the right to impose enhanced medical requirements where circumstances reasonably justify additional safeguards.

Authority of Medical Personnel

The appointed healthcare professional has sole authority regarding medical fitness to participate. Any competitor, coach, official, or participant instructed by the appointed medical professional to cease participation must comply immediately. Medical decisions made in the interests of competitor welfare are final for the purposes of that event. No person shall pressure, influence, or attempt to override the professional judgement of appointed medical personnel.

WKO Safety Authority

WKO officials may suspend, postpone, amend, or terminate any contest, activity, or event where they reasonably believe:

  • Safety standards are not being met.

  • Medical cover is inadequate.

  • Rules are being breached.

  • Participant welfare may be compromised.

Such decisions shall be made solely in the interests of safety and risk management.

Concussion and Head Injury

Any competitor displaying signs or symptoms consistent with concussion, head injury, loss of consciousness, impaired balance, confusion, or neurological impairment shall be removed from participation and managed in accordance with WKO policy and current medical guidance.

Return to participation shall only occur in accordance with applicable medical recommendations and WKO requirements.

Limitation of Responsibility

Combat sports involve inherent risks including, but not limited to, physical injury, serious injury, permanent disability, and, in exceptional circumstances, death.

Participation in WKO sanctioned activities is voluntary.

Nothing within these rules seeks to exclude or restrict any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable law.

Subject to applicable law, WKO shall not be responsible for losses, injuries, or damages arising from:

  • False, misleading, or incomplete information provided by competitors, coaches, clubs, promoters, or participants.

  • Failure by any individual to follow medical advice or safety instructions.

  • Failure by organisers, clubs, or promoters to comply with published WKO requirements.

  • Circumstances outside the reasonable control of WKO.

Compliance and Enforcement

WKO reserves the right to investigate any breach of these requirements.

Failure to comply may result in:

  • Event sanction withdrawal.

  • Suspension of competitors.

  • Suspension of coaches or clubs.

  • Refusal of future participation.

  • Referral to insurers, safeguarding authorities, or other relevant agencies where appropriate.

Amendments

WKO reserves the right to review and amend these requirements from time to time in order to reflect developments in legislation, medical guidance, insurance requirements, safeguarding standards, and best practice within combat sports. The most current version published by WKO shall apply.
